Courses within the Reproductive Grief Care Certification for Individuals
To achieve Reproductive Grief Care Certification, individuals attend eight online video courses and complete the accompanying coursework. Details on each course, including their approximate length, are outlined below.
- Reproductive Grief Care Training (3 hours)
One in four pregnancies ends in miscarriage and one in four women in the U.S. will have an abortion by the age of 45. Although these losses occur very differently, and every person’s experience is unique, the grief experienced by men, women, family members, and friends is often ignored culturally, leaving those impacted to suffer silently and alone. This course provides you with the tools you need to bring hope and healing to those impacted.
- Grieving Well (2 hours)
To aid us in better assisting those impacted by pregnancy and reproductive loss, we take a deeper dive into grieving well by identifying obstacles to grieving, exploring grieving styles, and focusing on the importance of our own grief work. We will also discuss practical ways to memorialize loss and reflect on our ability to choose to grow through grief when losses occur.
- Supporting the Grief Journey: A Guide Through Healing Pathways (1.5 hours)
This course provides guidance on how to navigate Life Perspectives’ healing websites. The “Healing Pathways” on these sites is modeled after Dr. William Worden’s tasks of grieving, and walks those impacted through their healing journey.
- “Silenced And Stigmatized:” Understanding How Women Feel After Abortion (1.5 hours)
In this event, which is part of Life Perspectives’ “Research Reveals” Guest Lecture Series, Dr. Rafferty discusses her groundbreaking research that examines how women feel after experiencing a medication abortion.
- “Spiral of Pain:” The Powerful Impact of Bad News Delivery After Miscarriage (1.5 hours)
In this event, which is part of Life Perspectives’ “Research Reveals” Guest Lecture Series, Drs. Brann and Bute examine women’s experiences with healthcare communications during a miscarriage and contrast them against optimal caregiver behaviors.
- “Men and Miscarriage:” The Forgotten Half (1.5 hours)
In this event, which is part of Life Perspectives’ “Research Reveals” Guest Lecture Series, Drs. Holman and Horstman discuss their research on men’s communications and feelings after miscarriage.
In addition to courses on helping others, Individual Certification also includes two self-care courses.
- Tackling Burnout, Exhaustion and Compassion Fatigue (1.5 hours)
A glimpse into the latest and most impactful research on preventing burnout, exhaustion, and compassion fatigue, especially as it affects perinatal and palliative healthcare.
- Invigorating Compassion (2.5 hours)
Compassion fatigue and burnout often deprive healthcare providers of the altruistic motivations that initially attracted them to professional caregiving. Aside from the recommendations for a healthier lifestyle, little has been offered to assist those in caring occupations to nurture their empathetic resiliency and enduring passion for helping others in need. This course helps care providers reclaim their compassionate zeal by uncovering factors that can derail the empathetic trajectory and assist in implementing practical applications that are truly beneficial both personally and professionally.

“Studies show that people impacted by reproductive and pregnancy loss suffer silently and alone,” added Fredenburg. “You can change this. You can help these neglected individuals process their grief – even years or decades after their loss.”
The fee for Individual Reproductive Grief Care Certification is $189.
